Touristic Info on Vigevano
Vigevano is located in Pavia province, on the right side of Ticino river, at about 35 km both from Milan and Pavia. Its historical centre is wonderful: we have to remember for example the Ducale Square, very famous cause it's considered one of the most wonderful Italians square. Above the square, in the highest point of the city, the Bramante tower rises up, built in many phases starting from 1198 and only completed by Bramante at the end of the 15th century. From here you can reach the Sforzesco Castle and, always from the square, the Renaissance Duomo, where the Museum of Treasure is located. Vigevano is not only a city of art, but also a north Lomellina industrial centre, situated along one of the most important road that connect Piemonte to Lombardia. The industrial development of the city started during the second half of the 19th century and made Vigevano the most important Italian shoe production centre.
Visconteo Sforzesco Castle
The Castle is situated at the top of the
city over the ancient walls that were built
during the Middle Ages.
Dated back to the middle of the 14th Century, ordered by Luchino Visconti, it was converted in a magnificent princely palace between the 1492 and the 1494 by the Duke Ludovico Maria Sforza called "The Moor", with the artistic contribute of Donato Bramante. The elegant "Loggia delle Dame" reserved to the duchess Beatrice d´Este was also built in this period. At the end of the Sforza dynasty, during the 1535, the castle was taken by the Spanish and became an accommodation for army. Actually it is under renovation. Opened all year long from 8.30 to 19.00. Closed on December, the 25th and 31st - January, the 1st. Admission free to the following area: Sforzesca court, Ludovico il Moro stable, Covered Street and underground levels, Horsewoman´s garden. During exhibition and events you can visit also the Fresco Hall, the second stable and the Horsewoman´s hall.
Ducale Square
It is one of the most beautiful Italian square,
designed by Bramante, it had been built since
1492 by Ludovico il Moro´s will, as
an anteroom of the castle.
One of the first examples of a Renaissance square designed as an unitary architectural work. The square, rectangular-shaped, is surrounded by arches porticos, held up by 84 columns each one with a different decorated capital. In 1680 at the hands of bishop Juan Caramunel Lobkovitz, some changes on the square structure were made by closing the fourth side of the Cathedral baroque façade, concave and perpendicular to the square axis in order to hide the Cathedral eccentricity.
Bramante Tower
The tower was built in different steps at
the top of the city; in fact its setting
started up on 1198 and continued until the
end of the 15th Century, when was completed
by Bramante.
By it´s battlements is possible to see a complete panoramic view on the square, the castle and the whole city. Opened from Tuesday to Friday: 10.00-13.00 / 14.00-17.30. On Saturday and public holidays: continuous hours 10.00-18.30. Entrance Ticket: € 1,50, Reduced Ticket € 1,20.
